MARKETA VONDROUSOVA

CAREER

“Tennis is crazy,” Marketa Vondrousova observed after winning the 2023 Wimbledon title to become the first unseeded women’s champion in the tournament’s history. The Czech had previously won only one match at Wimbledon and had thought that playing on grass was “impossible” but she went on to claim her first Grand Slam singles title.
Remarkably, that was the second time that Vondrousova had reached a major final as an unseeded player, as she had also done so at Roland-Garros in 2019 as a teenager.
